Sometimes you need a mesh with many faces that you can deform organically. This can be done using the primitives in MED but it is a tedious process. Here is an alternate method.
1. Start with a grayscale relief map. (or you can just click "File/New Terrain" for a flat mesh)

2. Import it into MED

3. Make the size mesh necessary--usually much smaller than the default terrain size.

4. Convert the mesh to a model so that you can use all the modeling tools.

5. Then you can deform the mesh into whatever you like. In this case I have made cloth.

It may be necessary to hit the recalculation command to smooth it out.

and the result, skinned
